Why Is Sterilization Important

First let us see what sterilization really is, “it’s the process of making some object free of live bacteria or other micro-organisms usually by heating or by chemical means”. Sterilization is important process in our daily life, one which helps us reduce risk of infection and prevent spread of infection or illness.

Reasons why sterilization is important for your baby:

The reasons why sterilization is important for your baby is because they are born with immature immune system, which means they are susceptible to many diseases while they grow up. So it is very important to sterilize their accessories like their feeding bottles, the fruit they eat, the utensils they use, and toys which with they play.

Kids Below age 12 months should always use sterilized bottles for feeding, because of how young they are their immune system doesn’t even start protecting them, therefore they are susceptible to catch some serious infections, including gastro-entities (diahorrea, vomiting) and mild form of thrush.

Now when baby starts growing up and starts to explore the world by its own by crawling, rolling or walking, it is important to remember that they still are kids with immature immune system and can catch infection at any time, so always remember to not forsake the habit of sterilizing their utensils and toys and other accessories. When they grow their needs also grow and so does the danger, so always keep caution and stay alert.

How to sterilize:

There are many methods that can be used to sterilize the baby accessories. These methods can generally be summarized into few:

Electric Steam Sterilization:

Electric steam sterilization is quick and efficient method and takes only 10-12 minutes plus cooling time. Here you can sterilize baby utensils by steam generated electrically. This process keep the utensils sterilized up to 6 hours.

Many steam sterilizers can sterilize up to six utensils at a time. Make sure to put items that are suitable for steam sterilizing, some parts of breast pump may not be suitable.

Microwave Sterilizing:

Many baby bottle can sterilized in microwave. This is a quick way to sterilize individual bottles, as it take only 90 seconds. While using this method it is very important to remember to keep the bottle lid open so it doesn’t build up pressure inside bottle.

The main advantage of this process is there is no smell and taste left after sterilizing, and it keeps the utensils and bottles sterilized for three hours.

Boiling Sterilizing:

If your baby bottle are suitable for boiling you can use this method to sterilize them. You will need a large pan, filled with water, where you put baby bottle and nipples. Make sure that they are fully submerged in the water. Now start boiling while keeping the pan’s lid close. Do this for 10 minutes and after that remove baby bottle and other items from the pan. Make sure to not use this pan for any other purposes, and only to boil baby bottles.

If you regularly use this method to sterilize baby feeding equipment’s, check the teats for any kind damage. Boiling can damage teats more quickly than other sterilizing methods.

Cool Water Sterilizing:

To sterilize baby bottle feeding equipment with cold water, use sterilizing solution dissolved in cold water. The solution kills bacteria very effectively. You’ll need to change the solution every 24 hours. While using this method it is important that you don’t use same container, or plastic because they can be easily affected by the chemical solution. After making the solution put the feeding equipment in it and put something heavy on it to keep it submerged in the solution for 30 minutes.

Using this method always remember to use manufacturer’s instructions to make solution, to use appropriate amount of water and solution. Otherwise it can become too concentrated or too dilute which won’t be good for feeding equipment. Take out bottles and teats only when you need them to use, shake them before cleansing it with cool boiled water.

How Long Should You Sterilize:

Continue sterilizing for your baby’s first year. You may think it is all pointless to sterilize everything, but remember your baby is just starting to build up his/her immune system and all this sterilizing helps them to build up their immune system even faster.

So when baby are 1 year old they have built up basic immune system so if you want you can stop after that, but always remember that whenever they get sick you have to start whole process of sterilizing their equipment.

Things To Keep In Mind
